Encouraging results from an asbestos detection project called PORPARDET, sponsored by the Research Executive Agency under the seventh Framework Programme, has highlighted the need for rapid on site asbestos detection, and produced prototypes for various tasks.
Complex mapping of the captured material by surface topology and particle properties shows whether asbestos is present but more importantly whether the dangerous range of particle sizes and aspect ratios exist in the sample.
The two year project has now been completed with encouraging results. The base package consists of an air sampler and portable battery powered detector. Air is drawn through a removable filter cartridge in the air sampler The cartridge is sealed and passed to the detector for reading. Numerical output from a simple display or via USB connection to a computer shows a user the detection results.
Several SME companies are developing the system further to incorporate additional features.
