A young welder and previous medal winner at SkillWeld, supported by The Welding Institute, has taken gold at Europe’s most prestigious vocational skills competition.
Josh Peek, a 20-year-old apprentice working for L&G Engineering in Norwich, won a gold medal in the welding category at the EuroSkills finals, held in Gothenburg, Sweden, earlier this month.
The Great Yarmouth College student triumphed over competitors from 15 other countries to contribute to an impressive medal haul for Team UK, which took home four golds, one silver and three bronzes in its best ever performance.
Josh is no stranger to success, having won a bronze medal for his performance at the 2014 SkillWeld competition. This national contest, supported by The Welding Institute, highlights outstanding national talent and serves as a feeder contest for international competitions such as EuroSkills.
Having earned his gold medal on the European stage, Josh now hopes to repeat his success when he represents the UK at the WorldSkills International Finals in Abu Dhabi next October.
Josh received his medal at an awards ceremony in front of 10,000 people on Sunday (4 December). His reaction to his victory can be seen in this video from WorldSkills UK:
