TWI was instrumental in helping to bring Member company, Philips Avent’s thermoplastic nebulizer to market following a feasibility assessment for the welding of individual component parts for the award-winning device.
The portable mesh nebulizer comes with a simple two-piece design with a detachable mouthpiece, making it easy to use, clean, and maintain. However, beneath this simple yet effective design is a number of individual component parts with complex curvature that TWI and Philips Avent had to work to find a manufacturing solution for.
Ultrasonic welding was deemed the best solution as it produces high quality joints rapidly in a range of materials and configurations. TWI offered suggestions for process improvements for the welding, as well as creating the aluminium sonotrodes and nests which allowed the workpiece to be introduced to the 20kHz ultrasound energy for joining the parts. The nebulizer, called the Innospire Go, won an ‘iF’ Design Excellence Award from the iF World Design Guide and is now in full production.
