James Boland taking training to get to the top of his career

Mon, 06 January, 2020

Having majored in mechanical engineering at university in Sydney, James was forced to reconsider his career path due to financial and time constraints, making the move into quality control and quality assurance (QA/QC) via a vocational training route.

James took the CSWIP Welding Inspector course to align with his existing experience and qualifications, having worked for years as a maintenance fitter in manufacturing chemical plants in Sydney. This course was complemented by further international qualifications in plant inspection and plans to attend site coating training.

While he is a proud associate member of Engineers Australia and a member of the Royal Society of New South Wales as well as a TechWeld member of TWI engineering council, James finds the membership of TWI beneficial to his career as it grants him the professional status within the engineering council as well as improving his status within the organisation.

Next, James is planning to undertake IIWS/ IIW technologist and IIW welding engineer training and certification, noting that continual study with TWI will lead him to gain the IIW qualification which he is aspiring for.

Although there have been some pitfalls and hurdles during his career, coming to TWI for further studies gave James the opportunity to meet his peers from other parts of the world and realise that he is not the only one facing such challenges.

James chose the TWI centre in Malaysia for his training as it was a convenient location with affordable travel costs and easy to enrol on the course there. He revealed that he found the lecturer, Siva, to be well rounded and knowledgeable in the course content. James explained he was happy with how the concepts were reinforced using multiple examples and how Siva was very patient with repeating and ensuring that nothing was missed during the training.
