NSIRC Impact Review
New for 2020, the National Structural Integrity Research Centre has officially released it's Impact Review. The compact review charts the history of the centre and includes case studies from former students who have gone on to achieve excellence in academia and industry.
Founded in 2012, after a call from government for academia led by industrial need, TWI, bp and Lloyd's Register Foundation (LRF) partnered to create a centre for postgraduate courses that could train a future generation of highly-skilled engineers, capable for rapidly adapting to the latest industrial and environmental challenges.
Engineering Masters courses in Cambridge
From the site at TWI in Cambridge, NSIRC manages several Masters courses and a PhD programme. Each postgraduate degree is orientated towards engineering.
Oil Gas, Structural Integrity and Lightweight Structures are run by Brunel University London, the lead academic partner of NSIRC, while Leadership and Management is run and awarded by Aston University, Birmingham, and the Executive MBA is with De Montfort University, Leicester.
New for 2021, the University of Essex will be launching a version of it's successful AI program at TWI with NSIRC, placing students with an Industrial R&D environment.
Industrial doctorate programme
The PhD student programme at NSIRC provides high-level academia with a call for research from the industrial partners of TWI and our sponsors.
PhD topics are based upon a fundamental need for research, or build upon the further research projects of previous NSIRC students.
Each one is of high industrial impact, a valve increasingly used by universities and governing bodies to examine the influence and reach of many high-level academic institutions.
Postgraduate education within an industrial environment has the added benefit of training students with industry experience in everyday business practices alongside their academic research. The end result is that even before graduating, students are familiar with typical business activities such as meetings, project management skills, budget responsibility and working a business day of 9 to 5. This training provides a seamless transition from a PhD to a career within Industry.
Since it's founding, NSIRC students have conducted over 800 years of PhD level research, have a completion rate of over 90% and all transition into industrial careers within one year of graduation.
Here are just a few of centres were NSIRC alumni have gone on to get a job in industry or academia:
- bp
- Ford Motor Company
- GE Renewable Energy
- TWI
- Brunel University
- LSBU
- Strathclyde University
