Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) which uses a magnet and flux leakage sensors to detect and locate corrosion, pitting and wall loss in steel structure. It travels inside pipelines and collects material loss data. Magnet is used to magnetise the steel. In areas where there is corrosion or pitting, there will be flux leakage, and flux leakage sensors are used to detect the leakage field and correlate the magnetic properties of the damaged pipe to the corrosion mechanism. This technique minimises catastrophic corrosion failures and the need for expensive verification excavations.
The knowledge acquired from this PhD project will help to improve and upgrade one of the MFL product, Fullagar's CorrSense system. Additionally, it will help to integrate Fullagar's CorrSense product with TWI's Fitness-For-Service tool to achieve a good structural integrity analysis. Theoretical, experimental and numerical research required.
