TWI Experts Attend Geothermal Industry Project Meetings

Mon, 26 September, 2022

TWI experts attended a series of meetings related to geothermal industry projects, including a panel meeting hosted at TWI Cambridge.

The panel meeting for the GeoSmart Project was held on 20 September at TWI’s head office near Cambridge. The 20 attendees were joined by TWI experts for a discussion around, ‘Materials Performance: Challenges and Exploring Opportunities for Geothermal Sustainability.’

Presentations from power plant operators from across Europe detailed the materials challenges associated with geothermal power, including the extraction of lithium from geothermal water. There was also a presentation on the current geothermal landscape in the UK from the British Geological Survey.

These presentations were then accented by presentations from a range of TWI experts, who presented potential engineering solutions. There was also a presentation on geothermal projects at TWI and a tour of our facilities.

The meeting created awareness of both the materials challenges and the opportunities to exploit the potential of geothermal energy as an untapped natural energy resource.

The GeoSmart consortium, including TWI, also held a meeting to discuss the latest progress in the project. 21 representatives from the 19 consortium partners attended the meeting to where they were also able to plan future strategy for the project which is working to improve the flexibility and efficiency of geothermal heat and power systems.

TWI representatives were also among the 22 attendees at a recent consortium meeting for the GeoHex Project, which is working to improve the efficiency of geothermal plants and reducing the cost of power plants through the optimisation of the heat exchangers used. Again, the meeting was convened to discuss progress and create strategies for the project’s future.
